Assessing Parent Risk Linked with Mental Health, Personality Disorders, and IPV

Rob Rowe, PhD

The mental health functioning of parents is often of significant concern to the family courts when they request an assessment of parenting capacity or relative parenting fitness. The current research examines mental health issues and their relationship to a measure of parental risk. Specific focus is on the relationship between psychopathy, borderline personality disorder (BPD), intimate partner violence (IPV), and the assessment of risk for negative child outcomes. The presenter will discuss how parental mental health can, or should be, discussed in the context of best interests for children.
