When

07/23/2026
10:00 am - 11:30 am

Event Type

Explore the psychological frameworks David A. Hoffman uses to help Collaborative professionals better understand the causes of impasse and the techniques used to resolve them. Building on the perspectives shared in his recent book, The Art of Impasse-Breaking in Mediation, Hoffman will discuss the use of Internal Family Systems, a nonpathologizing and intuitive framework that fosters curiosity and compassion for clients. The webinar will also explore “core concerns” (Fisher & Shapiro), System 1/System 2 thinking (Kahneman), and the psychology behind “difficult conversations” (Stone, Patton & Heen).

Participants will learn about several psychological models that can help Collaborative professionals understand the sources of negotiation impasses. Participants will also learn how to use those models to overcome impasses.

Participants will learn about the “three tables” of negotiation: a) expected value (b) interest-based bargaining; and (c) emotional connection and understanding.

To help accommodate attendees across different schedules and time zones, David will be offering this webinar in two separate sessions:

10am PT /1pm ET (Session 1)

5pm PT / 8pm ET (Session 2)
